The City of Springfield has denied a request by NAACP Economic Justice Task Force to allow the homeless community in Springfield to use tents and tarps for shelter.

The Task Force suggested that the tents and tarps be allowed in designated places with port a potties and trash clean up. Connecting Grounds Church had offered to pay for the services.

City leaders refused, saying it would create an unsafe environment.

The City added that current cold weather shelters are not full and three more could be open soon.
