Resurfacing Project Begins Monday on Sunshine Street

Roadwork starts today for one of Springfield’s busiest streets.

City construction contractor Blevins Asphalt Construction Co. will begin the resurfacing of Sunshine Street between Kansas Expressway and Glenstone Avenue beginning October 25.

The project is anticipated for completion in December.

Crews will be adding message boards and cones this morning, and actual construction will begin next Monday.

Motorists can expect at least one lane in each direction to be open at all times, but traffic delays can be anticipated.

Approved by voters in 2019, the resurfacing of Sunshine Street is part of a Major Roadway Resurfacing project also including portions of Battlefield Road (between Kansas Expressway and Glenstone Avenue) and National Avenue (between Kearney and Sunset streets).

The resurfacing of Battlefield and National are scheduled for spring of 2022.

The project is funded through federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funds and the ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax. The total cost of the major roadway resurfacing project is $2.9 million, with the Sunshine portion estimated to cost $824,000.
