(KTTS News) – A Springfield man who killed a homeless man in south Springfield in December of 2020 has been sentenced to 23 years in prison.
47-year-old Mark Akers was sentenced Friday on one charge of second-degree murder and seven years for tampering with a motor vehicle.
Akers is charged with killing 48-year-old Johnny Pendergrast.
Investigators say surveillance video captured Akers and Pendergrast in a physical altercation.
Akers then dragged Pendergrast into the vacant business and stole his car.
Investigators say a woman Akers knew told authorities he admitted to killing Pendergrast during a phone conversation.
