Biden and Harris Push for End to Gaza War Following Sinwar’s Killing

By The Media Line Staff

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have expressed optimism that the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar could pave the way for the return of Israeli hostages and bring an end to the war in Gaza. Sinwar, the architect of the October 7, 2023, attack that ignited the Gaza conflict, was killed by Israeli forces in a critical operation earlier this week.

Speaking after a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden emphasized the significance of Sinwar’s death. “Now’s the time to move on… move towards a cease-fire in Gaza,” Biden said upon his arrival in Germany. He underscored the urgency of ending the war and returning the hostages. “It’s time for this war to end and bring these hostages home,” he added.

Biden announced plans to send US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Israel in the coming days, where discussions will focus on post-war arrangements for Gaza and securing the region’s stability. While Biden expressed hope for an imminent cease-fire, Netanyahu stated that the conflict would continue until all hostages are safely returned.

The Biden administration has identified Sinwar as the “chief obstacle” to cease-fire negotiations, with US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller confirming that efforts would now “redouble” to push forward a cease-fire proposal. Talks had been stalled for months, but Sinwar’s death, according to Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan, offers a chance to deal a long-term blow to Hamas.
