(Reuters) – A small plane with five people aboard crashed on Sunday into the parking lot of a retirement community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, authorities said.

There was no immediate word on deaths or injuries.

Images shown on local TV stations showed the plane in flames atop parked vehicles with at least three cars on fire.

A spokesperson for the Lancaster Police Department confirmed the plane crashed shortly after taking off from the city’s airport. First responders were still working the scene and trying to determine how many people were killed or injured.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that five people had been aboard the Beechcraft Bonanza plane.

The incident comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of U.S. air safety.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators are probing several crashes in recent weeks: the midair collision of a passenger jet and U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, D.C., in January that killed 67 people, a medical jet crash in Philadelphia that killed seven people and a plane crash in Alaska that killed 10 people.
