Greene County Jail Groundbreaking

Construction crews started working at the site of the future Greene County Jail Thursday.

The new jail site is located at State Highway EE and Haseltine Road.

Excavation crews broke ground in early April, as the county considers construction businesses essential.

The county decided against holding a traditional groundbreaking ceremony due to the coronavirus crisis.

Total, construction and design for the new structure will cost an estimated $150 million.

Two general contractors have been hired for the project, JE Dunn, a nationwide firm with a Springfield office, and local contractor DeWitt and Associates.

Construction is following an at-risk process, which allows the contractors to give their input during the jail’s design.

Voters approved a 1/2 cent sales tax back in November of 2017, which is funding the new jail.

The project should be completed in about two years.
